Danville, VA. – It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Mrs. Martha Ann Hampton Hairston Stephens of 105 Parrot St. Danville, VA., who passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2019 in the Martinsville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Martinsville, VA.
She was a native of Cascade, VA. The daughter of the late David Elijah Hampton and Amelia Mealie Scales Hampton, born April 15, 1931.
She received her early education in Henry Co. VA. public schools, and she was previously employed at Dan River Mills, J.B. Taylor, and also did domestic work.
Martha was a member of Bibleway Holiness Church in Yanceyville, NC.
She was the last of her generation.
Martha was first married to James Hairston. On December 23, 1954 she married Clarence Stephens, Sr., and together they had seven children.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her seven brothers, David, Moses, Solomon, Mark, Peter, Charles and Johnnie Hampton; two sisters, Mollie H. Perkins and Mary H. Hairston.
Her survivors are seven sons, Clarence Stephens Jr. (Linda) of Blairs, VA., James Calvin Hairston (Stella) of Eden, NC, Wallace Hampton (Betty) , Claude Stephens (Cynthia), James H. Stephens (Joyce), Robert Stephens and David Stephens, all of Danville, VA.; four sisters-in-law, Odaris Clark, Lois Tabb, Dorothy Minter, and Doretha Hampton; twenty two grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
