Blanch, NC -It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Mr. Alonzo Lee Perry of 4464 County Home Rd. Blanch, NC, who passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022, in the Yanceyville Health and Rehab. Center Nursing Facility, Yanceyville, NC.
Alonzo Lee Perry was a native of Washington, D.C., born on August 14, 1927. He was the third of five children born to the late Cornelius Perry, Sr., and late Gertrude Perry. His life began simply and humbly and grew to have purpose and power. He grew up in a loving household, where the values of commitment, integrity, hard work and excellence were poured into him by his parents and family. The strength of who he became was also forged by his family experiences in North Carolina.
Alonzo always believed in hard work and being a good worker. He always had a job! As a teen, and young adult, his first real job, was working with his father at the United States Pentagon. He knew he had to do and be more to get to where his dreams were trying to take him. Alonzo loved his older brothers and wanted to follow in their footsteps. So before graduating high school he compelled his parents to allow him to join the U.S. Army, where he faithfully served as a Military Police Officer. He learned to use his hands as well as his mind on home projects and his business ventures. Alonzo branched out to start his own minority business and formed Perry Enterprise. This was an African American firm that provided his clients delivery service and bus excursion transportation throughout the northeastern states. He believed in putting his time and resources into the people and things that mattered to him most. Alonzo participated in a variety of business, civic, education, and community service organizations throughout his life. He enjoyed music, dancing, watching sports, and reading. Beyond his work, Alonzo was best represented by his church, his passions, and most importantly, his family. Alonzo had a strong faith and belief in God. In the early 1960’s he sang baritone in a group of 20 young men that traveled to different churches all along the northeastern states singing gospel hymns. Their well-orchestrated sound was splendid and enjoyed by everyone who had the opportunity to come to a performance. The experience left most with a feeling of awe and inspiration. He enjoyed being well presented and that was reflected by his exceptional taste in clothes. Alonzo loved a great meal, good company, and a lively and intelligent conversation. He could take anyone and offer a word of wisdom, warning, or wit.
Alonzo was a family man. He assumed the role to “provide and protect” and he did so with dedication and diligence. He married the late Inez M. Perry Burton and this union produced four children (the late Rothell, the late Ricardo, Hillary, and Michelle). Their love was strong and beautiful by the textures and tones that life brings through its many ups and downs. He loved his “baby girl Michelle” and was proud of the woman she became. Though through several marriages, a relationship that captured his heart was that with Rose Adams, the strength of their love produced a son, Alonzo. There were no limits to his love, he gave a sense of completion and purpose beyond anything he’d ever experience. His love for all will endure.
In his later years, Alonzo married Christine Perry, moved back to North Carolina, and decided to give the country life one more shot. Once again, he found himself drawn to community service and volunteered for several years with various local organizations for the betterment of his fellow man. During this era, he also took on the role of a father figure and grandfather with his new extended family (6 stepdaughters, 1 stepson and several grandchildren). Needless to say, he was a natural at country living. The legacy Alonzo leaves will live on through the lives that he touched. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, impeccable sense of style, sincere laugh, and loving spirit. Alonzo will also be remembered for being generous with his resources and time; for being kind to everyone who crossed his path regardless of status or stature.
Alonzo has been greeted in heaven, by his father, his mother, his brother (John), his sisters, (Delores and Thelma), his sons (Rothell and Ricardo). He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Christine; his children, Hillary, Michelle (Solomon) and Alonzo (Christine), adopted daughter Gaynell (James); brother, Cornelius, Sr.; grandsons, Khontar, (Brandi) and Aaron (Alisha); great grandchildren, Kelsi, Jerrius, Ryland, and Aaren; a host of nieces, nephews, and many other loving family members and friends. He will be honored and held dear as a Father, Grandfather, and Father-in-Law and his memory will be partnered with the words “Well Done.”
