Milton, NC - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Bertha Lawson Pyles 76 of 17429 Highway 119 North, in Milton, North Carolina. She passed away after a lengthy illness on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion, in Durham, North Carolina.
Bertha Geneva Lawson Pyles, daughter of the late Bertha Featherston Lawson and Henry Lawson was born July 17, 1949, in Halifax, Virginia.
She attended Virginia Public Schools. She was employed at J.P. Taylor Leaf Tobacco Company in Danville, Virginia until she retired to take care of her loving husband. Bertha joined Saint Mark Baptist Church at an early age. Her love for Jesus Christ never ended and she later got baptized again at Word of Faith Apostolic Church in Milton, NC. Her strong faith in God never wavered. She instilled this faith in her children, grandchildren and anyone that she would meet until she left this world to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is not suffering anymore and wanted everyone to accept Jesus Christ if you ever want to see her again. She was a loving, God-fearing, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Bertha was preceded in death by her late husband, Jimmy Pyles, four sisters, Ella Furges, Helen Hamlett, Lorraine Finch and Ruth Pyles, three brothers Theodore Harris, Jackson Harris and Johnson Harris, and one great granddaughter, Jayla Graves.
She is survived by her son Jimmy Elisha Pyles Jr. of Durham, NC; her two daughters Wanda Kay Pyles of Semora, NC, and Tracey P. Brandon (Alexander) of Roxboro, NC; her grand-child whom she raised Prinston Graves of Milton, NC; several godchildren; two sisters Christine Lawson of Baltimore, MD, and Frances Louise Majors (Frank) of NJ; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bunnie Johnson (Michael) of Baltimore, MD, and Barbara Royster (Kelvin) of Semora, NC; her step-sister-in-law Rosa Carrington (Albert) of Milton, NC; two step-brothers-in-law James Cunningham (Diane) of Danville, VA, Willie Cunningham (Barbra) of Washington DC; her dedicated caregivers Raven Clayton, Liz Scott, and Glenda Russell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
The Family will be receiving visitors at 17429 NC-Highway 119 North in Milton, NC between the hours of 2:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.
A public viewing for Mrs. Bertha Lawson Pyles will be on Friday, February 20, 2026; from 2:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Bertha Lawson Pyles will be conducted at 1:00p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Word of Faith Apostolic Church, in Milton, NC. Bishop Edward Breedlove will deliver “Words of Comfort.”
Interment will follow at Oak Level AME Church Cemetery in Milton, NC.
