“I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy 4:7-8
Mebane, NC - Mr. Alphonza “Bobby” Stewart transitioned to his eternal home on March 6, 2025, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was the son of Rosetta Stewart Phelps (Morris) and General Greene Poteat, both deceased. He was born in Caswell County, North Carolina on May 30, 1941.
Bobby was educated in the Caswell County School System and was employed as a long-distance truck driver for forty-two years. He was known as “Alley Cat” when communicating with his fellow truckers. He worked for Easco Aluminum until their closure, and went on to work at Westpoint Stevens until retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed eating lunch at Golden Corral with the Deacons and Truck Drivers on the first Tuesday of each month.
Bobby was a dedicated member of Mount Olive Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Van Driver, and Usher. Bobby was a true man of God. He loved God, his family, and community. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help others. If he saw a need, he jumped right in to help, no questions asked. He was often called “the walking Deacon” by some of his fellow Deacons, and was given this name because he walked while testifying. Some of his favorite scriptures were Psalm 107, Philippians 3:13, and Psalm 100.
Bobby leaves to cherish his memory the love of his life and wife of 60 years; Mary Hooker Stewart, daughter; Cynthia Stewart White (Rodney), granddaughters; Logan White, Carrington White and Ki’Shauna Stewart, daughter-in-law; Marquita Stewart, and five great grandchildren. Sisters; Norma Jean Phelps-Johnson (Louis, deceased), Phyllis Ann Phelps Carlos (Russel), Linda Phelps Elmore (Larry), Qunellus Phelps Rogers (Roy, deceased); one brother, Marcellus Phelps (Dee), three sisters-in-law, two brothers in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Alphonza Stewart, Jr. (Butch), and sister, LaVerne Phelps Chandler.
Bobby’s jovial personality, caring spirit and servant heart will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
