Milton, NC - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Deacon Van Cooper Hughes of Milton, North Carolina. He passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at his daughter’s residence, 166 Meadowbrook Circle in Danville, Virginia.

Deacon Van Cooper Hughes was the son of the late John C. Hughes and the late Easter Brandon Hughes. Deacon Van was born in Milton, North Carolina on June 08, 1935.

He grew up in Milton, North Carolina where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for his family. After attending school in the Caswell County School System, he went on to pursue a career in carpentry and farming to which he dedicated himself for numerous years, retiring from Brown & Root Industrial Services. After retirement he still pursued his love for carpentry completing numerous projects for friends and family.

He was dedicated member of the New Haven Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of Deacon Board, Senior Choir Member, Male Chorus Member, Handyman and faithful attendant until his health failed. Deacon Hughes shared his skills and talents inside and outside his church by assisting his fellow church family any way he could, whether by deed or prayer.

In his passing he now joins his parents, John C. Hughes and Easter Brandon Hughes; his children Keith A. Hughes, Vanessa Hughes Venable, and Jeannette Hughes; his siblings John Hughes, Jr., James Hughes, Albert Hughes, Walter Hughes, Roosevelt Hughes, and Shirley Hughes Stewart; his grandson Michael Tremaine Hughes; his sons-in-laws Ernest Johnson, and Barry Venable.

Those left to cherish his memories is his devoted and beloved wife Mildred “Ann” Hughes; daughters Deborah H. Johnson and Alma “Lucy” McGhee (Darryl); sons Ellis A. Hughes (Sandra), Van Donnell Hughes, Charles D. Hughes, Reverend Norman Scott, and Fabian Brandon; two sisters Queen H. Johnson, and Cora Hughes; brother Harry Hughes; sister-in-law Ella Scott; brother-in-law Harold Scott; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, his church family, and many cherished friends.

Public viewing for Deacon Van Cooper Hughes will be on Monday, November 24, 2025; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral.

Family visitation viewing for Deacon Van Cooper Hughes will be on Tuesday, November 25, 2025; from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at New Haven Baptist Church, in Milton, NC.

Funeral Services for Deacon Van Cooper Hughes will be conducted at 1:00pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at New Haven Baptist Church, in Milton, NC.

Interment will follow at New Haven Baptist Church Cemetery in Milton, NC.
