Dorothy Nesmith Gwynn Obituary

Providence, NC - It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Ms. Dorothy Nesmith Gwynn of 124 Gatewood Rd. Providence, NC, who passed away Friday, January 13, 2023; in the Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.

She was born November 17, 1944, in Nesmith, South Carolina to the late Silas Nesmith and Estelle Jones Nesmith. Dorothy received her education in the Williamsburg County, South Carolina School System.

Dorothy confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and joined St Paul United Methodist Church, in Morrisville South Carolina. After moving to North Carolina in the early 1960’s she joined Shady Grove Baptist Church, then moving her membership to Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained until God called her home. While at Blackwell, she was a devoted member of the Arvister Williams Missionary Circle, a devoted member of the Mass Choir, and served on the Kitchen Committee, along with being active in the community visiting the sick and shut in. She also was a member of the NAACP, and she was awarded twice as “Caswell County Mother of the Year”.

She was employed at Dan River Mills as a Weaver from 1966 until Dorothy retired in 1995. While employed at Dan River Mills, she became A Shop-Steward then head Shop-Steward until her retirement.

In addition to Dorothy’s parents, her husband, Robert Gwynn; three sons, Willie James Nesmith, Gregory Nesmith, and Darryl Gwynn; one sister, Francis Nesmith Boone; four brothers, Silas, Leroy, Johnny, and Joseph Nesmith; one stepson, Ernest Gwynn and one stepdaughter, Gloria Gwynn Thorpe which preceded her in death.

Dorothy Nesmith Gwynn leave to cherish her memories are three sons, Robert Nesmith (Ester), Tyrone Gwynn (Candice), Mark Nesmith, two stepsons, James Gwynn (Susan), and Curtis Gwynn; one son-in-law, Ned Thorpe; two stepdaughters, Bessie Thomas, and Linda Mims; three brothers, James Nesmith (Elizabeth), Esau Nesmith (Janet), and Roosevelt Nesmith; one sister, Margaret Watkins (Kenneth); one sister-in-law, Evangelist Glinda Nesmith; seven grandsons; eight granddaughters; several great grands; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A viewing for Ms. Dorothy Nesmith Gwynn will be Friday, January 20, 2023; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral.

A visitation for Ms. Dorothy Nesmith Gwynn will be Saturday, January 21, 2023; from 12:30pm to 1:00pm.

Funeral Services for Ms. Dorothy Nesmith Gwynn will be Saturday, January 21, 2023; at 1:00pm at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church, Yanceyville, NC.

Interment at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery following Funeral Service.
