Dr. Martha Marie Evans, LTC(R) Obituary
Martha Marie Evans was born on September 8, 1976, in Danville, VA to Virginia Paylor Evans and Roy Evans Sr. She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Evans Sr.
Martha was baptized at Beulah Baptist Church in Leasburg, NC at the age of 11. She continued to be an active member in the choir and other activities up until she went to college, assisted by the church scholarship.
Martha excelled in her K-12 education in Yanceyville, NC, in addition to extracurriculars such as band, Beta Club, cheerleading, and track and field. She was a self-proclaimed music enthusiast, maintaining her devotion to the arts in every stage of her life.
Upon graduating high school with honors, Martha was granted an Army scholarship to complete both her undergraduate and medical degree at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where in 1998, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Music. She was a member of the Mu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Martha began her career in the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Martha served as a medical officer in the United States Army for 22 years in various capacities throughout her career as a revered and compassionate psychiatrist and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC). She was stationed at Ansbach, Germany as the Chief of Behavioral Health and was responsible for securing the mental health of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade during deployments. Martha’s career took her around the globe, fostering a deep appreciation for travel.
LTC(R) Martha Evans, MD deployed to Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and received a Bronze Star Medal for her commitment to Service Members and Afghan detainees. While there, she sang in the choir. She completed her Active Duty Career at Fort Benning, GA, where she held multiple leadership roles in Psychiatry at the Martin Army Community Hospital. She continued her service in the U.S. Army Reserves operating as the Senior Psychiatrist to the 1493rd Combat and Operational Stress Control in Cary, NC. She celebrated her retirement from the U.S. Army surrounded by her loving community and was inducted into Veterans of Foreign Wars. She illustrated her passion for psychiatry by leading positions throughout the country with Access Telecare and Spring Health.
Martha described herself as adventurous, fun, and inquisitive; these qualities were luminated in everything she did. You could find Martha dancing bachata, salsa, and line dances from her youth with exuberance glittering in her eyes. She would belt musical theatre songs spontaneously, passing that joy of performance to her children. Every stage was hers as she eagerly participated in community theatre and supported local shows. Her voice — strong, spirited, beautiful — was often heard down the hallway, reflecting a confidence in herself in every note. She valued cuisine from every part of the world, enjoyed peaceful walks surrounded by nature, and reveled in teaching her children the value of exploring the unknown in life. She cherished bliss in her time on Earth and possessed a tenacity that refused to be understated.
Martha had a quick wit and radiated a love that knew no bounds, always holding a warmth in her smile that can’t be done justice with words. She always met you with a kind heart and honest thoughts. Her laugh was a song in itself, one that rings clear for all who knew her. We cherish the time we were blessed to spend with Martha and her soul still shines brilliantly. The ardor she had for life inspires us to not only live, but to live fully.
