Frederica Martin Obituary

Axton, VA - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Ms. Frederica Martin, age 66, of 7834 Axton Road, Axton, VA. 24054, who passed away Monday, September 19, 2022, at the Stratford Rehabilitation Center, Danville, VA.

On December 02, 1955, the late Obie Martin, Sr., and Rechetta Martin Hairston were blessed with their seventh child, Frederica Martin who was affectionately called “Rit.”

Frederica received her education through the Henry County School System. She graduated from Laurel Park High School, Class of 1974.

Rit was a beautiful and kindhearted person who enjoyed helping people. She had a loving nature about her always wanting to do things for others even when she did not have the means to do so. She was always smiling and would greet you with the names “Sissy or Bruh Bruh.” Rit had a special love for her nieces and nephews. She would always find time to visit, hug, and babysit them as much as she wanted to. Her love for the elderly, those who were sick, and the children kept her fueled and continuing to reach out to them even during her time of sickness. She was a “Survivor.”

Rit possessed a “Servant’s Heart.” She had the mindset and desire to serve others selflessly and sacrificially, regardless of your feelings toward her or what it may cost her. Kindness, compassion, and sacrifice are a few of the attributes she exemplified within her family and throughout the community. She knew the answer to maintaining her life and that was, “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  Rit pardoned grace to those she encountered and allowed love to flow from her to those who needed it.

Rit was reared in the admonition of God, at Gospel Light United Holy Church where the late Dr. Lettie P. Cohen was her Pastor. As she matriculated through life, she rededicated her life back to God and received salvation at St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Greene Moore. She was baptized on July 15, 2012.

Rit was preceded in death by her father and mother, Obie Martin,  and Rechetta Martin Hairston; brother, Obie Lee Martin, Sr.; and two sisters, Callie Artis, and Connie Wade. Rit leaves to cherish her precious memory and to carry on her legacy of love: her siblings and their spouses, Bertha Dillard (Jim) of Axton, Virginia; Louise Francis of Columbus, Ohio; Cozell Jenkins of Orlando, Florida; Abe Ray Martin (Christine) of Axton, Virginia; Kenneth “Dale” Martin of Reidsville, North Carolina; and Daphyne Martin of Axton, Virginia; 4 generations of nieces and nephews; a very special neighbor, Ms. Virginia Dillard, other friends, and her community.
