Yanceyville, NC. - With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Deacon John David Foster, Sr. who departed from this life on May 8, 2024, at his residence. Born on September 19, 1935, John David Foster Sr. was the beloved son of the late Mr. Willie Green Foster and Mrs. Wilhemina Adelaide Blackwell Foster.

Deacon Foster's journey through life was marked by a commitment to education and service. After graduating from Caswell County Schools, he pursued higher education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where he honed his skills and laid the foundation for a lifetime of success.

Throughout his professional career, John served with distinction as an Insurance Agent for NC Mutual Insurance and later as an Independent Insurance Agent until his well-deserved retirement. His dedication to his work left an indelible mark on his community, earning him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

A man of faith and integrity, Deacon John was an active member of Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon and church trustee. He was also a proud member of the Masonic Lodge  and an engaged member of the Caswell NAACP Branch, advocating for justice and equality.

Deacon Foster’s commitment to service extended beyond the church and community organizations. He served as a bus driver, farmer, substitute teacher in Caswell County, and Caswell County Commissioner. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of Director of the Section-8 Housing Program, where he worked tirelessly to provide housing assistance to those in need.

 John Foster married the love of his life, Eva Brooks Foster, and their union was filled with cherished memories. Together, they welcomed six children into the world, forming a loving and supportive family unit that brought him endless joy and pride.

Beyond his professional and community endeavors, J. Foster was known for his roles as a family historian and a captivating storyteller. He would often drive around the community in his truck, sharing his wisdom and spreading joy by distributing goodies. He was recognized as an upstanding citizen and a representation of God both publicly and privately.

In addition to his parents, Deacon John D. Foster, Sr. was preceded in death by one daughter, Cassandra Denise Foster Johnson; two sons, John D. Foster, Jr., and Reuben Foster;  four brothers, Willie Foster, Weldon Foster, Ulysses Foster, and Aubrey Foster; and one sister, Carolyn Foster Fuller.

He leaves to cherish his memories wife, Eva Brooks Foster of the home; two daughters, Bernadette Foster of Hampton, VA and Sheronda Verner of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; one son, Harlan Foster (Lorraine) of Pelham, NC; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Redding and Norma Foster both of Yanceyville, NC; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Brooks of California, and a host of other relatives, and friends whose lives he touched with his generosity, grace, and wisdom. 

John 14:1-3 (NIV) - "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

Deacon John D. Foster, Sr. will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.  In honoring his memory, let us carry forward his legacy of service, storytelling, love, and faith keeping his spirit alive in our hearts forevermore.

A viewing will be Friday, May 17, 2024, from 2pm to 7pm in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home.  Family visitation will take place from 1:30pm to 2pm prior to the funeral service.

Funeral services for Deacon John D. Foster, Sr. will be Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 2pm at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church.
