Mother Pattie Hawkins Graves Obituary

Alexandria, Va. - Mother Pattie Hawkins Graves, of  Alexandria, Virginia, transitioned peacefully at her residence on September 8, 2024, at the age of 91. She was born on September 3, 1933, in Aiken, South Carolina, to the late Willie Hawkins and Sally Clifton Hawkins. As the third youngest of eleven siblings, Mother Graves grew up surrounded by love and faith.

At an early age, Mother Graves accepted Christ into her life, a decision that shaped her journey as a faithful servant of the Lord. In 1965, she joined St. John’s Church of God in Christ, where she faithfully served on the Hospitality Board and the Willing Workers for many years. Later in life, she transitioned her membership to The Way of the Cross Church, now known as Living Waters Redeemed Apostolic Church of Christ, where she continued to serve her church with devotion and grace on the Prayer Warrior Team, visiting and praying for the sick and shut in.

Mother Graves was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon James P. Graves, Sr., and their union was blessed with ten children. She was predeceased by three of her beloved daughters: Patricia Cato - White, Gloria Dickerson, and Rebecca Ann Cooper. Her memory will forever be cherished by her surviving children: Shirley Aikens, Celestine Joyner, Edwards Graves, Penny Campbell, Brenda Graves, Vickie Johnson, and James P. Graves, Jr. She also leaves behind a remarkable legacy of 23 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored.

Mother Graves had a heart full of love for all children and found great joy in tending to her flower garden, nurturing life both in her community and in her home. She was a woman of prayer, steadfast in her faith, and deeply devoted to her family.

**Scriptures Reflecting Mother Graves’ Life: **

- *Faithfulness to God: * "His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’" (Matthew 25:21).

- *Love for All Children: * "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." (3 John 1:4)

- *Love of Tending to the Garden: * "The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." (Isaiah 58:11)

- *God’s Peace, Love, Righteousness, and Inheritance: * "And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places" (Isaiah 32:17-18).

Mother Graves’ unwavering faith, love, and dedication will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, service, and devotion to her family and community.
