Ruffin, NC - Alphonza Bellamy, Jr. was called to rest until the Lord’s return after a long health battle on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. He was born to the late Alphonza Bellamy, Sr. and Johnnie Mae Bryant Bellamy on January 04, 1970, in Conway, South Carolina.
He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized at a young age at his home church, Greater St. James AME Church of Conway, SC. There he attended Sunday School and served in the youth choir and usher board ministries, and he continued to attend throughout the years.
He received his education from Horry County, South Carolina Public Schools in Conway, South Carolina, where he was a 1988 graduate of Conway High School. Alphonza participated in football, track and wrestling and excelled in his God-given and well-known athletic ability. Some of his many accolades and history include: Being a member of the Conway High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Conway High Football’s First High School-All American; a three-time All-Region Conference participant, South Carolina-All State Selection; and the Shrine Bowl selection. Alphonza broke records and some still stand to this day.
Alphonza later furthered his education by attending North Greenville Community College before transferring to Winston-Salem State University. He was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
He met his wife, “his sweet pea” of 33 years at Winston-Salem State University and their relationship developed with God and belief that God joined them together. He was involved in “The Fellowship Ministry, Bible Study Group, Choir and Men for Christ Fellowship. There he took pride in growing spiritually and where he received the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
Alphonza was a dedicated, hard worker, who loved to work to provide for his wife and children. He was employed for 20 years at Bonset America Corporation where he retired early when his health began to decline. Before then, he worked for a few years at Copeland Fabrics and Burlington-Industries. He was affectionately known as “Big Al” at work and kept in contact with his co-workers. He also established a part-time lawn mowing business.
Upon moving to North Carolina after marrying, Alphonza joined and attended Graves Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Yanceyville, North Carolina. He served as a Trustee, member of Pastor’s Aid, Strengthen Thy Brother’s Men Ministry, Voices of Praise Choir and praise team, Youth Sunday School Teacher, and Children’s Church teacher with his wife. He also sang in the Young Adult Choir and Gospel Choir. He also maintained the lawns of the Graves Chapel Church for several years.
Alphonza, also known as “Fonza” and “Sonny Boy” was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, cousin, uncle, teammate and friend. He was such a friendly, warm-hearted, and all-around good guy to everyone he encountered. He was tall in stature with a big heart and always with a big smile. He loved to talk, joke around and share memories. He loved to cook and was the best preparer of his local “famous venison meatloaf with BBQ sauce.” Fonza was loved by many and touched so many lives, even during his illness. He loved his entire family and community in Conway. He loved taking his family at least a few times each year to visit and spend time with his South Carolina family for the holidays and other occasions. Alphonza was a part of a loving family with adventurous cousins who played all day. He had so many great memories that he shared with his very close family. They enjoy food, fun and fellowship and still have weekly Sunday dinners.
In addition to Alphonza’s parents, he was preceded in death by his son Terell O’Neil Bellamy; his brother Gaytrell Bellamy; an aunt Frankie Finney; two uncles Donnie and Lewis Bellamy; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Mr. Alphonza Bellamy Jr. leaves to cherish his memories with his beloved wife Sabrina Watlington Bellamy of the home, Ruffin, NC; his son Josiah Alphonse Bellamy of Burlington, North Carolina; his sister Sonya Bellamy of Conway, SC; one beloved grandson Kaleb Dupri Bellamy; two aunts Roberta Bellamy, and Marge Rainey-Bellamy; three uncles Jerome Bellamy (Genevieve), Calvin Bellamy (Tammy), and Rodney Bellamy; his mother-in-law Sallie Bigelow Watlington; brothers and sisters-in law: Marcus Watlington (Latricia-Yanceyville, NC), Charlene Royster (Christopher-Greensboro, NC); Gerald Watlington (Elon, NC), nephews- David Cox, Jr. (Conway, SC), Markel Brantley (Myrtle Beach, SC), Germale Watlington (Ruffin, NC), Lamarc Watlington (Erica-Santanio, TX), Trenton Watlington (Reidsville, NC), nieces-Briana, Mya, Christen Royster (Greensboro, NC), Laila Watlington (Ruffin, NC); a great niece Olivia Brantley (Myrtle Beach, SC) great-nephews-Elijah, Logan and Eric Watlington (Santonio, TX) and a host of other loving relatives and many cherished friends.
A public viewing for Mr. Alphonza Bellamy Jr. will be on Friday, June 13, 2025; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home.
The Family visitation viewing for Mr. Alphonza Bellamy Jr. will be on Saturday, June 14, 2025; from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Graves Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, in Yanceyville, NC.
Funeral Services for Mr. Alphonza Bellamy Jr. will be conducted at 3:00pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Graves Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, in Yanceyville, NC. Pastor Kenneth Walker will deliver Words of Comfort.
