Mr. Christopher Murphy Obituary

Axton, VA - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mr. Christopher Michael Murphy age 53 affectionately known as “Big Bird”, of 7375 Morgan Ford Road, Axton, Virginia. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Born in Rockingham County NC, on December 22, 1971, to Mazie Murphy and the Late Benny Murphy, Christopher grew up in a loving home and community. He attended Laurel Park High school and was known for his love and skill for the game of football, because of his passion for the game Christopher was sought after by several colleges for recruitment until he suffered an injury that would hinder his recruitment to those colleges. He graduated from Laurel Park High School with the Class of 1991. Christopher was employed by Hooker furniture for many years until his health declined.

Christopher accepted the Lord as his personal Savior and joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He was known for his love for the “Washington Commanders” and could be heard on any given day, letting others know “Big Bird will fly in any weather”. In his past time “Big Bird” loved to be around family and friends and he could be found sitting “under the tree” or faithfully taking care of his mother.

In addition to his father Benny Murphy, Christopher was preceded in death by his brother Tony Murphy, along with his maternal grandmother Virgie Williams, and his nephew Akoreon “AJ” Murphy.

Those left to cherish his precious memories include his beloved  mother Mazie Murphy of the home; three brothers Danny Murphy of the home, Anthony Murphy (Darcia) of Stoneville, NC, and Kevin Williams of Axton, VA; four nieces Paulette Cooke (Carlos), Staci Murphy, Alisha Williams, and Keiro Arrington (Chastin); two nephews Markese Dillard, and Dajshon Murphy; eight great nieces and nephews and two great-great nephews; three aunts; Bernice Motley, Jessie Mae Wooding and Gladys Clark; one uncle Jimmy Williams (Mironda); and a host of other relatives, and many cherished friends.
