Eden, NC - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mr. Herman Scales of 231 Brightwood Road, Eden, North Carolina. He departed this life peacefully on April 02, 2025, at his home surrounded by his wife Mary C. Scales and other loved ones.
Herman Alexander Scales was born July 08, 1942, the third child and only son of the late Alex Zander Scales and Garnett Roberts Scales in Stoneville, North Carolina.
Herman was educated in the public school system in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He attended what was then Stone Elementary and Charles R. Drew High School. After graduation he was employed at Fieldcrest Mills for several years. To fulfill his dream of becoming a professional driver, he enrolled in the CDL Training Academy in Linden, NJ and received his necessary credentials. It was his desire to experience seeing other parts of the country, while being employed. He traveled through many states in the US, mainly in the East Coast, but also many other states in the country while employed by Roadway Trucking Company for 25 + years. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 391 and received several citations and awards for his safe driving record from the American Trucking Association and the National Safety Council.
He was united in Holy Matrimony with Mary C. Hairston on November 24, 1988, and gained many nieces and nephews and many other family members. Herman was a devoted husband to his wife Mary and his home. Affectionally known as Herman, he was a quiet man of great character, quiet strength and unwavering dedication. He had a passion for life that extended to his hobbies and interests.
His favorite pastime was watching the news, various sports on TV and pampering his antique Buick Lesabre. At an early age he began acquainted with the Lord at Shady Grove United Methodist Church where he became a member and regularly attended Sunday School and Worship Service. Later he joined Robinson Memorial United Holy Church along with his wife Mary where he remained a faithful member until his health declined.
Herman was a dedicated son to his parents. After the death of his father at a young age, he shared in the welfare of his mother’s wellbeing and did so faithfully until her death. He could be seen regularly maintaining the gravesite at Roberts Cemetery where his Grandfather Victor Roberts lay to rest and Shady Grove Cemetery where his father Alex Scales lay to rest.
In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by his oldest sister D. Maxine Scales Hurtt and a Stepbrother Paulio Roberts.
Herman leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 37 years, Mary C. Scales, two sisters, Susan Helena Scales of Eden and Eunice Scales Reaves of Baltimore, MD, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Family visitation viewing for Herman Alexander Scales will be on Monday, April 07, 2025; from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00a.m. at Robinson Memorial United Holy Church, in Eden, NC
Funeral Services for Herman Alexander Scales will be conducted at 11:00a.m. on Monday, April 07, 2025, at Robinson Memorial United Holy Church, in Eden, NC
Interment will follow at Ridgeview Cemetery in Eden, NC.
