Milton, NC- It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mr. James A. Hughes of Yanceyville, North Carolina, who passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
James was the son of the late Onslow Hughes and Ila Mae Wade Hughes, born May 21,1937, in Caswell County, North Carolina, where he attended the local public schools.
James worked in construction for years and also operated Rockway Fish House, as a caterer in New York.
James was a member of New Haven Baptist Church, where he sung with the Male Chorus.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Smith Hughes; son, Kelvin Edjuardo Hughes; sister, Eva Samuels; and brother, Earl Hughes.
Mr. James A. Hughes leaves to cherish his memories to his four daughters, Dr. Cynthia Dodd of Oahu, Hawaii, Illa Laverne Galloway Crowder (Roy), of Staten Island, New York, Keshi Surles (Russell, Jr.) of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Janine H. Nelson (Rashawn, Jr.) of Brooklyn, New York; three sons, Larry Hughes of Jamacia, New York, David Hughes (Sherri) of Blairs, Virginia, and Kenyon Hughes of Bedford, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Jefferies of Milton, North Carolina, and Jerlene Hughes of Danville, Virginia; one brother, Wallace Hughes of Washington, DC; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and many cherished friends.
A Public viewing for Mr. James A. Hughes was held on Friday, January 10, 2025; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral.

Funeral service for Mr. James A. Hughes will be conducted at 2:00 pm Sunday, January 12, 2025; with family arriving at 1:30 pm at New Haven Baptist Church, Milton, NC.
Interment will follow in the New Haven Baptist Church Cemetery.
