Mr. James Leonard. A.K.A. "Skinner" Martin Obituary

Axton, VA.- It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mr. James Leonard Martin affectionately known to many as “Skinner” of 84 Scales Road, Axton, Virginia. He passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Piney Forest Nursing Facility in Danville, Virginia.

James was the son of the Late James Edward Martin and Sarah Dillard Martin. He was born June 22, 1944, in Leaksville (Eden), North Carolina.

At an early age, James confessed Jesus Christ, and he was baptized at The Only Way of Cross Holiness Church in Eden, NC, under the leadership of the late Bishop William Giles, where he became an active member. Later, James joined St John Missionary Church under the leadership of Pastor Zachary Dark, serving as a trustee until his health declined.

He was educated at Henry County Public Schools, and he worked for Hooker Furniture, Fieldcrest Mills, retiring from A.C. Furniture. James enjoyed fast cars and spending time with his best friend Sherman Adams (Possum). He also loved his great nieces, nephews, and especially his best buddy “Anjolynn”. James cared deeply for his cat Blacky and Chihuahua Susie. Known as a “Gentle Giant,” he had a big heart for children and generously helped anyone in need.

He was predeceased by his parents and three siblings: Margaret Ann Strange, Timothy, and Barbara Martin. James was a humorous, loving, and dedicated brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Mr. James Leonard Martin leaves to cherish his memories with one sister Edith Evonne Harris of Axton, Virginia; two special nieces Gwendolyn Strange (Lawrence) of Cascade, Virginia, and Michelle Harris Worthy (Drew) of High Point, North Carolina; a special nephew Quinton Strange of Axton, Virginia (residence); five other nephews Brad Harris (Bridgett) of Dallas, Texas, James Gregory Harris (Yvette) of Garner, North Carolina, Bobby Lynn Strange of Axton, Virginia, DeAndre Strange (Lori) of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Victor Harris (Lisa) of Durham, North Carolina; niece, Latoya Strange Woods (Christopher) of Monroe, Louisiana; his loving caregiver: Martia Clark of Cascade, Virginia; and other loving relatives, and friends.

The family can be reached at the residence of his niece, Mrs. Gwendolyn "Gwen" Strange, located at 2404 Cascade Road, Cascade, Virginia.

A public viewing for Mr. James Leonard Martin will be Friday, February 28, 2025; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fulton-Walton Memorial Chapel 417 Price Street, Eden, NC.

Funeral services for Mr. James Leonard Martin Aka "Skinner" will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 01, 2025, at St. John Baptist Church in Axton, Virginia.
