Axton, Va. - Mr. Jessie Herman Martin affectionately known as “Herman, Ram or Slim, peacefully transitioned on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Martinsville, Va. Born on July 24, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was the beloved son of the late Hilton Martin Sr. and Lottie Watkins Martin.
Herman attended Henry County Schools and was known as a hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family.
Herman was employed at Hooker Furniture Factory in Martinville, Virginia for over 40 years prior to his retirement. He also worked alongside his mother cleaning Bob White Chevrolet.
Herman was rooted in his faith and was a member of Mt. Sinai Holiness Church in Axton, VA.
Herman enjoyed the simple things in life and one of his hobbies was making sure his yard was mowed a few times a week as well as keeping the yard “On the Hill” and the community mowed. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Joe Lewis Watkins, Joseph Martin and Hilton Martin, Jr.
He was a loving Husband to Celia Martin, with whom he shared a blessed union and two children: a daughter, Constance Martin Florence (Derante) of Eden, North Carolina, and son, Ira Martin of Axton, Virginia. Herman was also a proud grandfather to three grandchildren: Jahil Martin, Caitlin Martin and Daphanie Burrow (TJ); great grandchild Wrenley Burrow; who brought great joy to his life.
Herman is survived by his cherished siblings: three sisters, Mary Waller (Harry), Mary “Polly” Martin (Curtis) of Axton, Va., Isabella Penn of Jersey City, New Jersey. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Jenniever Watkins of Axton, Va., Essie Mitchell, Fleater Martin, Idella Huffman, Rebecca Huffman all of Cascade, Va., and Minnie Jefferson (Onnie) of Martinsville, Va.; devoted caregivers, Jimmie Lee Martin and Eleanor Martin; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Jessie Herman Martin leaves a legacy of faith, love, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace.
Public viewing for Mr. Jessie Herman Martin will be Saturday, March 14, 2026; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fulton-Walton Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel 417 Price Street Eden, NC.
Visitation for Mr. Jessie Herman Martin will be Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00p.m. at Mt Sinai Holiness Church 276 Cozy Lane Axton, VA.
Funeral service for Mr. Jessie Herman Martin will be conducted at 2:00 pm Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church.
Interment will follow in the Watkins Family Cemetery Axton, VA.
The family receiving visitors daily beginning Wednesday from 3pm to 7:30 pm at the residence 197 Moral Hill Dr. Axton, Va.
