Mr. Joseph A. Withers Jr. Obituary

Reidsville, NC – It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Aaron Withers, Jr., who transitioned at his residence on August 4, 2024. Born November 17, 1958, in Caswell County, he was the beloved son of the late Joseph Aaron Withers, Sr. and Maggie Howard Withers.

Joseph graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in 1977 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from North Carolina A&T State University.  Following his graduation, he dedicated his early career to teaching Physical Education at Smith High School in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Joseph then transitioned into a career in chemistry, initially working as a chemist at Boehme Filatex Chemical Company.  He later retired from Stockhausen Chemical Company, where he also served as a chemist.

A true sports enthusiast, Joseph, though an Aggie, passionately supported his favorite college and NFL teams - the North Carolina Tar Heels and the San Francisco 49ers. He had a love for fishing and was known for his culinary skills. Joseph also had a passion for travel the world and cruising, visiting destinations such as Aruba, the Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, and Jamaica.  He especially enjoyed traveling to the east coast to see the lighthouses.

Joseph was a devoted member of Red Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, trustee, and Bible study teacher. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Yvonne Byrd.

Joseph leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Theon Murphy Withers, of the home; one stepson, Alton J. Ellison, also of the home; four sisters: Margaret Cannon (Ulysses) of Pelham, North Carolina; Sandra Douglas (John) of Greensboro, North Carolina; Ann Parker of Pelham, North Carolina; and Claire Coltrane (Leon) of Yanceyville, North Carolina; mother-in-law, Estella Murphy of Pelham, North Carolina; brothers in law and sisters in law, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Joseph’s legacy of love, faith, and dedication will forever be remembered and cherished by his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
