Mr. Makye Antoine West Obituary

Oak Ridge, NC - Makye Antoine West, affectionately called "Kye", was born on July 1, 1999, in Silver Spring, Maryland — a radiant soul whose presence brought light, laughter, joy, meaning, and lasting memories to every life he touched. On April 12, 2026, Makye peacefully transitioned, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and quiet strength that will continue to uplift generations.

Makye began his educational journey at Fort Dupont Park Seventh-day Adventist Day School in Washington, DC, where his early years were shaped by faith, discipline, curiosity, and zest to always learn something new. He later graduated from Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, MD., carrying with him a spirit of excellence and determination. His academic path continued at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC, where he further cultivated and shared his gifts, always with a sense of intention and purpose.

Makye began learning the construction trade at just 14 years old, working alongside his uncle at HEP Contractors. What began as hands-on experience grew into a meaningful foundation for his future — one built on commitment, skill, and an unwavering work ethic.

Makye was an old soul; grounded, thoughtful, and deeply attuned to the world around him. His love of music spanned generations, rooted in the timeless sounds of James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Prince, and Michael Jackson. Music was woven into the fabric of his life and became a cherished bond between him and his mother. Often, he would call her singing the opening line of a song, and she would respond with the next line — two voices meeting in harmony, expressing a love that needed no explanation.

Athletic and naturally gifted, Makye never encountered a sport he couldn’t master. Whether competing on the field or engaging in friendly challenges, he brought energy, confidence, and joy to every sport, both as a player and spectator. Yet beyond his physical talents was a sharp, inquisitive mind. He loved to debate, explore ideas, and challenge perspectives — always with intention, insight, and a desire to understand the world more deeply.

Kye's presence was unmistakable. His magnetic smile, warm spirit, and inviting personality drew people in effortlessly. A true empath, he felt deeply and connected easily, offering compassion, understanding, and sincerity in a way that made others feel seen, valued, and safe. His intuition was unmatched.

From his earliest days, Kye was surrounded by profound and intentional love. His grandparents played an essential role in his upbringing, cherishing him so deeply that they refused to let “their baby” attend childcare. Their devotion ensured that his childhood was filled with protection, guidance, and unwavering affection.

Above all, Kye loved wholeheartedly. His family and friends were the center of his world, and he gave of himself freely, always lifting others with encouragement, support, and quiet acts of kindness. He never sought recognition; instead, he offered strength in the moments it was needed most.

Like the gentle force of wind beneath our wings, Makye’s life was a steady and uplifting presence — subtle yet powerful, humble yet deeply impactful. Though he never sought the spotlight, his influence is undeniable, and his love will continue to carry those who knew him forward.

Makye was preceded in death by his grandfather Richard West, uncle Dwayne Richard West, and his sister-cousin Nijah.  He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving parents, Richelle and Kevin Marshall, and Cleon Gant; his devoted sister Kaitlyn, sister Kalea; and his cherished bonus siblings, Laneshia, Satoria, Kevin Jr., Kenneth (Camille), Giovanni, Kimberli, Keyvonna, and Elora. He is also fondly remembered by a host of nieces and nephews who brought him immeasurable joy.

He further leaves to honor his memory his grandmother and greatest cheerleader, Nancy Hairston West, beloved uncle, Anthony West (Nekia); his dear aunts, Christel Richardson and Kim West; along with great uncles and great aunts, a host of cousins, extended family members, and treasured friends whose lives were forever enriched by his presence.

Kye leaves behind a legacy of love, grace, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered as a source of strength, resilience, and light.
