Danville, Virginia - Gladys Olivia Wilkerson was the daughter of the late Jessie Strange and Mary Tinsley Strange. She was born March 8, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She departed this life on May 30, 2024, to a new and glorious one.
She received her education in Pittsylvania County Public Schools.
Her first place of employment was with Standard Garment Company as a seamer in Martinsville, Virginia.
She later became employed and retired from Fieldcrest Mills of Eden, North Carolina. After retirement, she worked out of her home taking care of her grandchildren, sewing, cooking, and serving in her church.
She was united in holy matrimony to Ernest Roger Wilkerson Sr. who preceded her in death. This union was blessed with seven children, and she remained a devoted wife and mother until her death.
She professed her love and commitment to Jesus Christ in 1952 where she joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She served as, a devoted member and the church mother of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade, Virginia until her health failed.
Gladys was preceded in death by one son, Ernest Roger Wilkerson Jr.; five brothers Bobby Joe, Percy, Olanda, Charlie, and David Strange; five sisters, Dorothy Strange, Mabel Adams, Kathleen Wilson, Lucille Adams, and Marion Wheeler and one grandson, Ryan Adams.
Left to cherish her memories are two daughters, Joan Raynor (Bruce) of Valley Cottage, NY, and Hope Coleman of Burlington, VT; four sons Larry Daniel Wilkerson (Rosemary) of Eden, NC, Donald Lee Wilkerson (Chanie) of Cascade, VA, Gilbert Wayne Wilkerson Sr. (Gloria) of Richmond, VA, and Mark David Wilkerson (Cathy) of Conyers, GA; twenty-nine grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; survived by one brother Walter T. Strange of Cascade, VA; and one sister Barbara Jean Clark (David) of Silver Spring, MD.; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A public viewing for Mrs. Gladys Olivia Strange Wilkerson will be on Friday, June 7, 2024; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fulton-Walton Memorial Chapel 417 Price Street, Eden, NC 27288.
Family visitation for Mrs. Gladys Olivia Strange Wilkerson will be on Saturday, June 8, 2024; from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Gladys Olivia Strange Wilkerson will be conducted Saturday, June 8, 2024; at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Cascade, Virginia.
Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
