Milton, NC - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Inez Johnson Southern, 87, of 1179 Yarborough Mill Road, in Milton, North Carolina. She passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Duke University Hospital, in Durham, North Carolina.
Inez, the beloved daughter of the late Raymond Johnson and Alberta King Johnson, was born on February 17, 1939, in Caswell County, North Carolina.
She attended the local public schools. Shortly afterwards, she pursued employment in the textile industry at Dan River Mills in Danville, Virginia and later at Burlington Industries. Being skilled and talented, Inez transitioned into home health care, where she provided assistance with daily living activities for the ill, disabled, or the elderly.
Inez was a faithful member of Hamer Missionary Baptist Church in Blanch, North Carolina, where she served as a Deaconess, a Missionary, and a Senior Choir member.
In addition to her parents, Inez was preceded in death by her husband Ollie Southern, Jr., her daughter Sharon Southern Stewart, and her son James “Moon” Swanson.
Mrs. Inez Johnson Southern leaves a legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She is lovingly survived by her three daughters, Sandra Echols (Melvin) of Blanch, NC, Barbara Moore of Anderson, and Angela Southern of Milton, NC; her two sons, Julius Swanson (Sharon) of Danville, VA and Shaun Southern of Milton, NC; her devoted sister, Earlee Yancey of Pelham, NC; and her brother, Johnny Orange of Danville, VA.
She also leaves to cherish her memory her honorary daughters, Sharon Long, Doris Wright, Sonya Moore, Wanda Williamson, and Patsy Lipscomb; her best friend, Juanita Brim; sixteen beloved grandchildren; a host of precious great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends whose lives were touched by her kindness, wisdom, and enduring love. Her beautiful spirit and treasured memories will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.
A viewing for Mrs. Inez Johnson Southern will be Friday, May 08, 2026; from 2:00pm to 7:00pm in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home.
Funeral service for Mrs. Inez Johnson Southern will be Saturday, May 09, 2026; 3:00pm at Hamer Missionary Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
