Katherine Smith, a.k.a. Mama Kat, 79, of Danbury, Connecticut departed from this life peacefully at Nuvance Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut on Tuesday, November 05, 2024.
She was born on May 05, 1945, in Caswell County, NC as the daughter of the late Alonzo and Lauran Gilmore Womack. As a child, she was affectionately given the nickname “Nick” by her older sister, Josephine. A name that followed her to Caswell County High School where she graduated in 1963. Soon after graduating from school, she relocated to Danbury, Connecticut with her cousins.
It was in Danbury that she met and married the late Flint Smith in August of 1966. To their two-decade long union they had three children: Kevin “Mike”, Flint, Jr. “Blue”, and Tara.
Katherine accepted Christ in her life at an early age and grew in the Lord all her life. As a young adult she served the Lord through her membership with the Christ Temple Holiness Church where she served for several years as a choir member.
As she grew in the Lord, she was led to serve under the leadership of Apostle Bobby and Pastor Mary Gardner within the Victory Christian Center in 1984. Over the next forty years she served the Lord and her community faithfully. To elevate her knowledge in the faith, she attended the Bethel Bible Institute where she graduated in 1986. She further served as a youth choir director, Sunday School teacher and leader of community outreach. As part of the community outreach she led a nursing home ministry, even after she lost her sight. In August 1991 she was ordained as an Evangelist. Many lives were impacted through her ministry of prayer and her fervent teachings about the Holy Spirit. She attended many conferences about the Holy Spirit and studied the ministry of teachers such as Oral Roberts. She was an instructor at the Victory Bible Institute where she taught about the Gift/Person of the Holy Spirt. She was a bona fide prayer warrior and true soldier in God’s army. Her passion about prayer was the motivation of her teaching bible studies in her home. Whenever led to do so, she always had a song in her heart for a solo. She served her community and in the house of Victory Christian Center as an active and faithful member until her passing.
Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her children: Flint Smith, Jr. “Blue” (Michelle) of Connecticut; Tara L. Sinkler (Michael) of North Carolina; her grandchildren: Darius Smith, Deaven Smith, Carter Blue Smith, all of CT; Braylon Sinkler and Paityn Sinkler of North Carolina; and one great grandchild, Thaison Smith of Connecticut. Her beloved siblings: Leroy (Annie) Womack, George (Mary) Womack, Geraldine (Joe) Thompson, Melinda (Ronald) Turner, Alonzo (Silvia) Womack, Leona Brandon, Dorothy Thaxton, and Marylene McCain; Goddaughter, Shirley Atkinson; Godson BJ Atkinson; a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Lauren; her son, Kevin “Mike” Smith (Kellie Lasiello); siblings, John (Dorothy) Womack, Junior (Dorothy) Cunningham, Earl (Rejoice) Stewart, Josephine Thompson and Essie Goodman.
A memorial service for Mrs. Katherine Smith will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Cathedral of God 290 Highway 158 West, Yanceyville, North Carolina.
