Mrs. Lelia Hairston Thompson Obituary

Eden, NC - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Lelia C. Hairston Thompson 89, affectionately known as “Lil” of 305 Monroe Street Eden, NC. She departed this life on Thursday, June 06, 2024, at Ancora Compassionate Care Hospice in Wentworth, North Carolina.

Born on June 30, 1934, in Eden, North Carolina; Lelia was the daughter of the late Aaron Hairston and Madeline McCollum Hairston. She was a graduate of Douglass High School, “Class of 1952” in Eden, North Carolina; where she was a part of the band, a majorette and played basketball. Lelia continued her education by attending Barber school to follow in her father and brother’s footsteps. She later graduated from Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, North Carolina, where Lelia received her degree in Culinary Arts.

She used her culinary skills as head cook at Deep Springs Country Club in Stoneville, North Carolina. Lelia also worked at Stoneville Furniture Factory for more than 15 years, retiring early due to a work injury. She had a love for children which led her to work for Bertie’s Day Care and later Perkins Day Care, both in Eden, North Carolina.

Lelia was united in holy matrimony to the late Willie “Son” Edward Thompson on November 15, 1969. She gave her life to Christ and joined Robinson Memorial Holiness Church in Eden, North Carolina under the leadership of the late Hal Royster. In 2019 Lelia joined the Monument of Faith Ministries in Eden, North Carolina under the leadership of Pastor Walter D. Robertson. She served there as a devoted member and the oldest church mother of the Mother Board. Lelia was a God-fearing woman who was full of wisdom. She was an outspoken but loving mother, nanny, and friend in her own unique way. She knew how to light up a room with her jokes and no one was ever a stranger to her. She was dedicated to reading her bible, daily bread and watching her Westerns while sitting on the porch.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Lelia was preceded in death by her daughter, Valencia Cohen; one sister, Margaret Fulton; two brothers, Earnest Hairston and Lawrence Hairston; one great-grandson, Jamari Wilson; one brother-in-law, Tony Fulton; and a nephew, Darryl Fulton.

Mrs. Lelia C. Hairston Thompson leaves to cherish her memories with her daughters, Patricia Parris, Sharon Tinsley both of Eden, North Carolina, and Yolanda Thompson of Greensboro, North Carolina; her son, Damiano Brooks (Lorraine) of Ruffin, North Carolina; one sister, Theresa Galloway of Greensboro, North Carolina; one brother, William Hairston of Eden, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; two God- children, Caitlyn Fontaine of Madison, North Carolina, and Domonic Martin of Jacksonville, Florida; her best friend (sister), Christene Martin; her special friend, Mother Hallie Thompson; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; in-laws; other relatives: and friends who will truly miss her.
