Cascade, VA - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Mary Adelaide Hairston Strange age 88, of 3563 Huntington Trail Cascade, Virginia. She was called to eternal rest on Wednesday, January 07, 2026, at her residence.

Mrs. Mary Adelaide Hairston Strange was born on May 14, 1937, in Cascade, Virginia to the late Walter Hairston, Sr. and Margaret Carter Hairston.

As a native and lifelong resident of Cascade, Virginia, she received her education from local public schools and received her General Educational Development (GED) at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, North Carolina. Mary furthered her education by receiving her associate degree at Danville Community College as a License Nurse Practitioner (LNP) in Danville, Virginia.

Mary was a License Nurse Practitioner (LNP) at the Morehead Hospital in Eden, North Carolina prior to her retirement. Her clinical expertise along with her advanced nursing skills aided in Mary providing high-quality patient care, conducting assessments, and developing treatment for those in her care. Mary was a faithful member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, in Cascade, Virginia where Mary served on the nurse’s unit and the fellowship choir. She often attended Star Bethlehem Apostolic Church and was a board member for over forty years for the Fire department both in Cascade, Virginia. In her spare time Mary particularly had a love for flowers, and she also enjoyed gardening, mowing her lawn, and shopping.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her devoted husband George Eddie Strange Jr. of 44 years, her precious daughter Jennifer Strange Walden, all her siblings; Walter Hairston Sr., Daniel Irvin Hairston, Mozella Hairston, Jerry Winston Hairston, Betty Irene Thompson, George Dillard Hairston, Yvonne Lucertia Hairston, Melvin Benjamin Hairston, Pearline Hairston, and great grandson Christian Pool.

Mrs. Mary Adelaide Hairston Strange leaves to cherish her memories with her devoted children Joel Strange of Decatur, Georgia, Patricia Strange Poteat (William), Regenna Strange London (Warren) all of Cascade, Virginia, and Wanda Strange Jackson of Decatur, Georgia; her three sisters-in-law Rita Hairston, Charlotte Wilkerson both of Eden, North Carolina, and Edith Hairston of Maryland; her brother-in-law Frank Strange of Charlotte, North Carolina; her eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and her one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and many cherished friends.

The family will be receiving family and friends from 2:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. daily at the residence.

Public viewing for Mrs. Mary Adelaide Hairston Strange will be on Thursday, January 15, 2026; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fulton-Walton Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel of Eden; located at 417 Price Street, in Eden, NC.

A family visitation viewing for Mrs. Mary Adelaide Hairston Strange will be from 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. at Fulton-Walton Funeral Home & Memorial Chapel of Eden, located at 417 Price Street, in Eden, NC location only. No viewing at the Church.

Funeral service for Mrs. Mary Adelaide Hairston Strange will be conducted at 11:00a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, in Cascade, VA.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Danville, VA.
