Blanch, NC - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Naomi Elaine Smith Long of 1050 Spruce Garden Dr., Rural Hall, NC, formerly of 733 John Long Rd., Blanch, NC, who passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at her residence.
Naomi S. Long was born on April 4, 1942, in Oxford, NC, to the late George Lee and Josephine Peace Smith. She was educated at the Joe Toler School and Mary Potter High School before continuing her education at Elizabeth City State University. She returned to Granville County upon graduation and began a career in education, teaching at Mary Potter and in South Boston, Virginia. During this time, she sang gospel alongside her sisters, Queen and Dora, when she met and later married Isaac Roy Long and made their home in Blanch, NC.
While raising her family, Naomi continued to teach in the Caswell County School System at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, with stints as an instructor and administrator at Piedmont Community College. She was an avid cook and seamstress, loved to coordinate weddings, and volunteered within her community and church. Alongside her husband, she was active in the local and state Democratic Party, volunteering in voter participation efforts and participating in advocacy groups such as the NAACP and the NC Black Legislative Caucus. Over the years, she served in leadership roles for several organizations, including the boards of the High Rock Community Center, the Caswell Family Medical Center, the Renegade 4-H Club, and the Caswell County Credit Union. She was also an active member of High Rock Baptist Church, Missionaries on the Move, the National Education Association, and the American Businesswomen's Association.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Queen Elizabeth Smith, her father and mother-in-law, John Henry and Annie M. Long; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Tommy and Susie Long, Roosevelt and Margaret Long, and Sidney and Marie Long.
To cherish her memory, Naomi leaves behind her daughter, Veronica Long-Walker, and son-in-law, Omega Walker, of Rural Hall, NC; son, Michael Long of Washington, D.C.; sister, Dora Smith of Durham, NC; grandchildren, William Walker and Desiree Walker; and stepchildren, Angela Long and Isaac L. Long. She is also survived by her honorary daughter, Pattie Greene (Kevin); brother-in-law, Joseph Long (Mattie); sister-in-law, Ella Crutchfield (Joe); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A family visitation viewing for Mrs. Naomi Elaine Smith Long will be on Monday, July 14, 2025; from 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. at High Rock Baptist Church in Blanch, NC.
Funeral service for Mrs. Naomi Elaine Smith Long will be conducted at 2:00pm on Monday, July 14, 2025, at High Rock Baptist Church in Blanch, NC, where Reverend Henry Long will deliver the Words of Comfort.
Interment will follow at High Rock Baptist Church Cemetery in Blanch, NC.
