Ms. Betty Irene Hairston-Thompson

Eden, NC - Betty Irene Hairston-Thompson, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after a brief illness.

 She was born in Cascade, Virginia, on April 2, 1945, to the late Margaret Carter Hairston and Walter Hairston, Betty grew up in a loving home and community. She attended Cascade Public Schools and graduated from Southside High School in Blairs, Virginia.

Betty lived a life rich in faith, love, and service, making her home between Cascade, Virginia, Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Eden, North Carolina. She was a faithful member of Springfield Baptist Church in Eden, where she taught Sunday School and inspired many through her love of the Bible. Her favorite pastimes included reading Scripture, teaching the Word, walking, and staying active. Her passion for spiritual growth and her unwavering devotion to her family were the cornerstones of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved siblings: Pearline Hairston, Mozella Hairston, Yvonne Hairston Perkins, Jerry Hairston, Bill Hairston, Daniel Hairston, George Hairston, and Melvin Hairston.

Betty Irene is survived by two devoted sons: Vernon Thompson of Washington, DC  and  Muata Makonnen (Bridget) of Yanceyville, North Carolina Grandchildren she cherished:  Tyler Thompson of Greensboro, NC,  Ilijah Makonnen of Yanceyville, NC,  Jeremiah Hutchinson, Kiah Thompson, Aysha Thompson, Nasia Thompson, and Rachelle Thompson, all of Los Angeles, CA  She is also survived by her loving sister Adelaide Strange of Cascade, VA, devoted friends Mozella Wilkerson, Linda Hampton, Cheryl Curran and Katura Drew, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and many extended family members, and lifelong friends whom she dearly loved.

Public viewing for Ms. Betty Irene Hairston-Thompson will be on Friday, July 11, 2025; from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at Fulton-Walton Memorial Eden Chapel; 417 Price Street, Eden, NC.

 Family visitation  for Ms. Betty Irene Hairston-Thompson will be on Saturday, July 12,, 2025; from 1:30p.m. to 2:00p.m. at Fulton-Walton Memorial Eden Chapel.

Funeral service for Ms. Betty Irene Hairston-Thompson will be conducted at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 12 2025, at Fulton-Walton Memorial Eden Chapel; 417 Price Street, Eden, NC.
