Cascade, VA - It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Ms. Nancy Hairston Smith Phillips 89, of 349 Tender Lane in Cascade, Virginia. She passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at UNC Rockingham Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Eden, North Carolina.
Nancy was born on July 16, 1936, in Cascade, Virginia to the late Robert A. Hairston and Estelle Flippen Hairston.
She received her education from the local public school system, and Nancy continued her education by going to school to receive her cosmetology licensure.
In the 1950’s, Nancy moved to New York and was eager to begin her career and give back to the community as a cosmetologist. Nancy utilized her skills and talent in the cosmetology industry, where she was rewarded with trophies throughout her hairstyling career.
After retirement Nancy relocated back home to Cascade, Virginia. She also gave her life to Christ and joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, in Cascade, Virginia under the leadership of the late Reverend John Tinsley. She was passionate about reading and hanging out with her two sisters, Doreatha Hall and the late Mildred Jamison. They were affectionately known as “The Hat Ladies.”
In addition to Nancy’s parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands Waddell Smith and Ralph Phillips; her daughter Sheila Smith; and four sisters Mary Ruth Samuel, Hattie Catherine Adams, Mildred Jamison, and Clara McKenzie; two brothers Robert and Tommy Hairston.
Ms. Nancy Hairston Smith Phillips leaves to cherish her loving and precious memories with her son Victor Smith of New York; her beloved three sisters Ann France (George) of Columbia, Maryland, Doreatha Hall of Cascade, Virginia, and Thelma Pearson of Lanham, Maryland; and her two brothers George Hairston (Indira) of Atlanta Georgia, and Joseph Hairston (Monia) of Cascade, Virginia; her three grandchildren Sarah Smith, Robert and Summer Green; her nine great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many cherished friends.
A public viewing for Ms. Nancy Hairston Smith Phillips will be on Friday, January 09, 2026; from 11:00a.m. to 12:00 noon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade, VA.
Family visitation viewing for Ms. Nancy Hairston Smith Phillips will be on Friday, January 09, 2026; from 11:30a.m. to 12:00 noon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade, VA.
Funeral Services for Ms. Nancy Hairston Smith Phillips will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Friday, January 09, 2026, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade, VA.
Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Danville, VA.
