Percy Watlington Obituary

Burlington, NC -

Percy Watlington was born in Yanceyville, North Carolina on October 18, 1919; and went home to be with the Lord on October 06, 2022.  He was the eldest child born to Azzie and Hattie Watlington of Yanceyville, North Carolina.  The family included two boys, Percy, and Roosevelt Watlington and three girls, Wilma Graves, Virginia Mims, and Mable Brown.  He was raised in Caswell County, North Carolina and graduated from Caswell County High School.

Percy served in the United States Army during World War II and married Fadonia Gwynn, the love of his life, in 1947.  After the completion of his tour of duty in Europe, he attended Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry in 1949. 

After graduation, Percy began an incredible career of 30 years as a research chemist in the United States Food and Drug Administration in Washington, DC.  Also, during this period, Fadonia embarked on a 30-year nursing career in public health in the District of Columbia.  In 1981, Percy and Fadonia retired from the federal civil service and moved to North Carolina. 

Percy enjoyed listening to music, watching sports, reading newspapers, and traveling.  He was a fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Carolina Panthers.  He and Fadonia traveled to Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and nearly all fifty states including Alaska and Hawaii. 

On October 18, 2021, Percy celebrated his momentous centennial birthday with over 100 family, friends and former colleagues at The Clubhouse at Lake Mackintosh in Burlington, North Carolina.   He received many proclamations and well wishes in recognition of his milestone birthday from federal, state, and local government officials including the Office of Veterans Affairs, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Former United States President Barack Obama. 

Percy was a faithful Christian and follower of Jesus Christ.  He was raised in the Baptist tradition and he was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church in Yanceyville, North Carolina.  He later became an active member of People’s Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, DC and Saint Stephens United Church of Christ in Greensboro, North Carolina for many years.  He was a long-time supporter of a variety of non-profit organizations, charitable causes, and humanitarian relief efforts in the United States. and around the world. 

Percy was preceded in death by his parents, Azzie and Hattie Watlington; his loving wife of 64 years, Fadonia Watlington; his brother Roosevelt Watlington and his sisters Mable Brown and Wilma Graves.  Percy is survived by his daughter, Andrea Gordon (Jacques) of Altadena, California; his sister Virginia Mims of Reidsville, North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, professional colleagues and Hampton classmates, the majority of whom reside in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Georgia.  Percy was loved by family and friends for his kindness, sense of humor, soft spoken nature, and gentle spirit.

A viewing for Mr. Percy Watlington will be Friday October 14, 2022; from 2  to 7 p.m. in the John and Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Mr. Percy Watlington will be Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 1000 Gorrell St. Greensboro, NC. Interment will follow in the  Alamance Memorial Park Burlington, North Carolina.
