Greensboro, NC - It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Mr. Thomas I. Ramsey of Greensboro, NC, who passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, in the Duke Hospice (Hock Family Pavilion) Durham, NC.
Thomas Irving Ramsey of Greensboro, NC was born on June 15, 1943, in Norwich, Connecticut to the late Thomas Ramsey and Lucy Maude Edwards Ramsey Branch. He was the oldest of two children.
A proud follower of Jesus Christ, Thomas was baptized at a young age and became a member of Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Macon, NC. In his later years, he enjoyed attending Mineral Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Pelham, NC to worship with his wife.
Thomas received his primary and secondary schooling from the North Carolina Public School System in Warrenton, NC. Following his graduation from John R. Hawkins High School, Thomas pursued his formal education at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography. He further enhanced his education at the Institution of Government in Chapel Hill, NC, acquiring numerous credentials, including a certification in Community Planning from the NC Department of Natural and Economic Resources.
Thomas’ successful career journey began at the NC Department of Local Affairs in Washington, NC as a Community Planner. Then he became the Director of Comprehensive Planning for the Neuse River Council of Government in New Bern, NC. Afterwards, he was employed as a Community Planner and Community Development Representative at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Greensboro, NC where he retired in 1998 after 26 years of service. And following retirement, he continued to work as a consultant for the state of North Carolina for several years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven C. Ramsey and his stepfather, James Eugene Branch and stepbrother, George E. Branch.
Thomas’ life and love will forever be cherished by his lovely, selflessly devoted wife, Loretta Gwynn Ramsey of 56 years. He will also forever have a place in the hearts of his sister Gwyndolyn Dian Alston of Macon, NC, stepbrother, John E. Branch (Tomeathea) of Bowie, MD, goddaughter, Nia Lipford of UNC Greensboro, NC sister-in-law, Dorothy G. Slade of Yanceyville, NC, his beloved nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 2 to 7 PM in the John & Juanita S. Fulton Memorial Chapel of Fulton-Walton Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be Sunday, January 15, 2023, 1:30 PM with family arriving 1:00 PM at Mineral Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Kenneth Miller will deliver the words of comfort. Interment will follow in the Mineral Springs Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
